Elvis tops dead celeb income list again

The King is No. 1 yet again.

Elvis Presley remains the richest dead celebrity, according to Forbes Magazine’s top listing of wealthy deceased celebrities.

The singer’s estate tops the magazine’s list with a $37 million income. About $4 million of that came from a new version of A Little Less Conversation, which was featured in a World Cup soccer television advertisement in June and spent four weeks as the top single in the United Kingdom, Forbes said.

Charles Schulz, creator of the Peanuts comic strip, is ranked second with a $28 million estate, followed by former Beatle John Lennon and Nascar driver Dale Earnhardt, both with $20 million.

Earnhardt, former Beatle George Harrison, rapper Tupac Shakur and author Robert Ludlum are new to the list this year. Actor James Dean, artist Keith Haring, Frank Sinatra and artist Andy Warhol fell out of the 13-person compilation.

The magazine compiled the list by interviewing surviving family members, lawyers and estate administrators and calculating pretax earnings from licensing agreements and book and record sales from June 2001 to June 2002. Celebrities had to earn at least $3 million in income.

Following Earnhardt and Lennon at No. 3 are: (5) Theodor `Dr. Seuss’ Geisel, $19 million; (6) Harrison, $17 million; (7) author J. R. R. Tolkien, $12 million; (8) singer Bob Marley, $10 million; (9) Jimi Hendrix, $8 million; (10) rapper Tupac Shakur, $7 million and Marilyn Monroe, $7 million each; (12) singer Jerry Garcia, $5 million and Ludlum, $5 million.
