At last, we know what’s meant by burnin’ love

A New Zealand supermarket owner has spent two months fashioning toast to mark the 25th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death.

Reuters reports that Maurice Bennett has constructed a portrait of Elvis measuring 62 square feet and crafted out of more than 4,000 small slices of toast.

Bennett - he’s done Mona Lisa, too - says Elvis has a special place in his heart. “I’m totally into Elvis. I just fell in love with the man.”

Using a commercial oven capable of cooking up to 90 full-sized slices of toast at a time, Bennett grilled the bread to six shades, ranging from burned for Elvis’s hair to lightly warmed for his skin.

Separate ways

“The weird thing about it - and no Elvis fan would ever forgive me for this - is I didn’t get to meet Elvis and it didn’t bother me that much, because I got to meet Felton Jarvis who was his record producer. And I loved every minute of it.”

- Presley historian and reissue producer Ernst Jorgensen, 51, who got to see Elvis in concert once at a 1976 show in Johnson City, Tenn.

  • Overton Park Shell

Elvis, with Scotty Moore on guitar and Bill Black on bass, performed one of his first live performances at Slim Whitman’s show July 30, 1954. “We were all scared to death,” Scotty recalled. “Elvis, instead of just standing flat-footed and tapping his foot, he was kind of jiggling. … With those old loose britches that we wore, you shook your leg and it made it look like all hell was going on under there.”
