TV is making sure you get your Elvis kicks

Elvis at 70. White suede shoes. Heartbreak hospital. A little more conversation, a little less action.

It didn’t happen. Elvis Presley died unexpectedly in 1977 at age 42, so he isn’t turning 70 Saturday the way he should have. But he remains forever young (relatively) and hot (in his younger years anyhow) on film.

Examples? Here comes a birthday onslaught this weekend. It begins at 8 tonight when the Pax network (Channel 50) gives us a celebratory airing of his 1967 musical romp, “Clambake,” co-starring Will Hutchins, Bill Bixby and Shelley Fabares.

Turner Classic Movies hauls out three Elvis faves in Saturday’s screenings of “Jailhouse Rock” (1 p.m.), “Kid Galahad” (3 p.m.) and “Viva Las Vegas” (5 p.m.).

AMC really goes all out, filling this weekend with eight films repeated at various times; the first airings Saturday are: “Roustabout” at 11 a.m., “Fun in Acapulco” at 1 p.m., “Easy Come, Easy Go” at 3 p.m., “Paradise, Hawaiian Style” at 5 p.m., “Girls! Girls! Girls!” at 7 p.m., “G.I. Blues” at 9 p.m. Sunday there’s “King Creole” at 3 a.m., “G.I. Blues” at 3 p.m., and “Blue Hawaii” at 7 p.m.

AMC even filmed location vignettes at Elvis’s Graceland in Memphis and his childhood house in Tupelo, Miss., and talked with people who worked with him. Those clips air during breaks.

The latest Elvis record is not the kind you download. If you were in Memphis, you knew you weren’t on Lonely Street at all those sold-out events. But Graceland spokesman Kevin Kern says the official attendance figure for the week was 75,000. Even in the sweltering heat, 55,000 took part in the candlelight vigil. “The […]

  • Record 35,000 attend vigil, but a few kept outside in ‘confusion’

About 35,000 Elvis Presley fans and spectators braved a formidable rainfall Thursday night and early Friday for the vigil honoring the 25th anniversary of Presley’s death, but some visitors complained that they were turned away at the gate Friday morning.
The crowd estimate more than doubles the previous mark set at the 20th anniversary vigil, said […]

  • Humes High School

Elvis began his freshman year in September 1949 at Humes High School, now the site of Humes Middle School. He walked 10 blocks down Jackson every day to get to school from Lauderdale Courts.
