Top Dawg

We asked some of the biggest talent gurus on the planet whether anyone, past or present, was or could be as big a celebrity as Elvis Presley.
From Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell to Rolling Stone music critic and historian Dave Marsh, the answers compared Elvis with everybody from Michael Jackson to Frank Sinatra to Marilyn Monroe.
What they had to say will be in our special Elvis edition of Friday’s Playbook or on the internet at www.goelvis.com. We don’t want to give it all away just yet, but one of our favorite comments was from Tom Brown at Turner Classic Movies in Atlanta. Brown, vice president of original productions, said Elvis and Sinatra, both eventual movie stars, began the same – with screaming girls at their feet.
“But people didn’t suddenly cut their hair real short, lose a lot of weight and wear a tuxedo to look like Sinatra.”

I saw Elvis four times in concert. I have also seen most of the big performers and bands, such as Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Bob Seger, Rod Stewart, Elton John and many many more and without a doubt Elvis is the greatest artist and performer of all time. His voice was incredible and his command of the audience was second to none. There will never be another entertainer that will have the impact on popular culture that Elvis had. This is obvious by his continued popularity 30 years after his death.

  • West still grieves at failure to save Elvis

Delbert “Sonny” West may be the most controversial and outspoken former member of the Memphis Mafia. As Elvis’ bodyguard and security chief, West was a trusted confidant of the King, accompanying him everywhere from concert halls to the inner sanctum of the White House.
West, his cousin Red West and Dave Hebler were fired […]

  • Graceland

Elvis purchased Graceland Mansion in March 1957, for $102,500. He put down $10,000 in cash, and got $55,000 in trade for the Audubon house.
